How to choose a sound system

  • Speaker type by area Ceiling speakers suit offices, corridors and shops. Column and line-array speakers suit halls and reverberant spaces. Horn speakers and sound projectors suit outdoor areas, car parks and plant rooms.
  • Line voltage Most building systems use 100 V (or 70 V) lines, which let you run many speakers on long cables from one amplifier.
  • Zones and volume control Split the building into zones so announcements and background music can be sent where they are needed, and add volume controls in rooms that need their own level.
  • Amplifier power Add up the power taps of all speakers and leave spare amplifier capacity for future speakers.
  • Cable Size the speaker cable for the line length and load. If the system also works as a voice alarm, use fire-resistant cable as your specification requires.
